This is an open educational resource for anyone keen to improve their Sudanese Arabic and who has an intermediate + level of Arabic. Every couple of weeks I provide a link to a publicly available Youtube film or documentary featuring Sudanese Arabic commentary and culture, a short orientation and very brief study notes on key words.

What We Do

My Sudanese Arabic tutor, translator and expert in Sudanese proverbs and folktales, Muna Zaki, provides a transcript of part or all of the video and I offer a literal English translation and explanation of key expressions used. We hope to help learners wishing to understand and use real colloquial Sudanese Arabic in a range of lexical fields. Our focus is on informal conversational Sudanese Arabic. Any errors in this blog are my responsibility alone and I am grateful for any corrections readers can provide.

Why?

My experience as a life-long Arabic learner with a passion for Sudan is English speaking learners of Arabic really crave authentic listening input to improve their fluency, confidence and understanding of real life communication. We hope learners and teachers will enjoy this resource.

The transcripts and notes are copyright Muna Zaki and Imogen Thurbon. We do not authorize any commercial use of our materials.
